Background

Canada's spectrum regulator, ISED, says jammers, including devices that block GPS, are prohibited in Canada, with administrative penalties of up to $25,000 for an individual's first violation and up to $10 million for a business (ISED, 2025). In October 2024 Transport Canada issued a civil aviation safety alert about increased GPS interference, which it said was mainly around conflict regions abroad. It named the Black Sea, the Baltic, the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, and no area of Canada (Transport Canada, October 2024).

The Royal Canadian Air Force reported in May 2023 that its space aggressor team had jammed GPS during army exercises for the first time, including Maple Resolve at Wainwright, Alberta, working within two fixed boxes of two kilometres by two kilometres (Royal Canadian Air Force, May 2023). We found no Canadian authority statement attributing interference in Canadian airspace to a particular source. For the reporting on interference in Canada, and who it is attributed to, see: Americas.

Only hexagons whose centre lies inside Canada's borders are counted, so hexagons in neighbouring countries and out at sea are left out. The map is framed on 41.7 to 70 and -141 to -52.6.

Canada: with few aircraft, one report can give a hexagon a high share; see the limitations.

By altitude

Canada: Mostly low altitude: points to local, low-power jammers. How this is read.

Below 5,000 ft6,4554.8%
5,000 to 15,000 ft10,6000.6%

Canada: an aircraft is counted in each layer it crosses, so the rows do not add up.
