Background

Most published reports of GPS interference in the Americas come from the Caribbean and northern South America. In January 2026 ICAO's Pan American regional aviation safety group said airlines and air navigation providers had reported a growing number of jamming and spoofing events in the Maiquetía, Piarco, San Juan, Curaçao, Georgetown and Paramaribo flight information regions, and noted FAA notices covering overwater parts of Mexico, Central America, Panama, Bogotá and Guayaquil. It said no incidents or accidents had been attributed to the events (ICAO RASG-PA, January 2026).

A New York Times analysis of Stanford data found that at least one in five Caribbean flights had had GPS problems since early September 2025, and reported that US warships deployed to the region and Venezuela's armed forces had both jammed GPS (The New York Times, December 2025). In North America the interference best documented in public notices comes from scheduled military tests, which the FAA announces in flight advisories, such as those for White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico (FAA, March 2025).

By altitude

The Americas: Mostly low altitude: points to local, low-power jammers. How this is read.
