GPS jamming in Africa today

Africa today: 14.0% of monitored areas are affected.

Background

This page counts only the African countries with enough aircraft to measure on most days: South Africa, Morocco, Algeria, Kenya, Senegal, Tunisia and Botswana. Egypt, which also has steady data, is counted under the Eastern Mediterranean. Across much of the continent too few aircraft and receivers report for a hexagon to appear, so a blank map there means no data, not no interference.

The African Civil Aviation Commission told ICAO's Assembly in 2022, on behalf of 54 states, that interference can limit the benefits of satellite-based augmentation in Africa and that some reports describe it crossing international borders (ICAO A41-WP/304, 2022). IATA said in July 2025 that its flight data showed a safety risk beyond the areas in EASA's bulletin, naming the Cape Town and Kano flight regions in Africa (IATA, 2025). EASA's tables of 14 October 2026 name African regions mainly in the north-east and the Horn, such as Asmara, Khartoum, Mogadishu and Addis Ababa, and none of the seven countries above (EASA, 2026).

Africa: with few aircraft, one report can give a hexagon a high share; see the limitations.

By altitude

Africa: Mostly low altitude: points to local, low-power jammers. How this is read.

Africa: an aircraft is counted in each layer it crosses, so the rows do not add up.
